tBI'JUCUL to THE VRHHB.I GREYMOUTH, May 4. At the final monthly meeting of the present borough council there was full attendance of councillors, presided over by the Mayor (Mr J. VV. Grcenslade). The lighting committee was instructed to go into the matter of installing a light at the further end of Preston road. The Greymouth Fire Board wrote regarding the dangerous practice of cars parking in Herbert street, near the Regent Theatre exit, and also the practice of cars parking over tire plugs. The letter was referred to the traffic inspector, to carry out tiie necessary regulations. The Mayor said it would be the last meeting of the council that he would attend and he presented a comprehensive report outlining the work in the borough during the last eight years that he had been mayor. He expressed his appreciation of the work done oy the councillors and the help that had been given him on occasions by the deputy-mayor <Cr. Kitchingham). Councillors all paid a tribute to the work of the retiring mayor and it was unanimously decided that the council place on record its appreciation of the services rendered by the Mayor. Pursuant to notice given, Cr. Kent moved "That before the final approval of the aerodrome site at Blaketown, the council shall insist that one of. the conditions be that the present road remain open until the proposed deviation is completed." The motion was carried unanimously. During April 12 building permits, ol a total value of £2227, were issued by the council. Books issued at the Municipal 'Library last month totalled 2390. Tickets issued totalled 55, white 25 new books were placed on the shelves. Stock examined at the Municipal Abattoirs last month comprised:Cows 20, bullocks 143, sheep 483, lambs 22G. pigs 9, calves 51. Fees totalled £lls 7s Id. At present the number of employees in the borough under the No. 5 relief scheme is 93, an increase of three as compared with the end of March. Kumara Accidents | While engaged in cutting a piece of wood, Mrs L. Hunt, of Beach road. Kumara, practically severed a big toe when the axe slipped. She was removed to the Westland Hospital. A broken right wrist was sustained by a young man. Philip Henham, when he fell whilst skating at Kumara, and he was taken to the Grey Hospital. Amateur Play Under the direction of Mrs J. W. Dickson the Greymouth Playlovers presented P. G. Wodehousc's comedy, "Good Morning. Bill." in the Town Hall. The production was in aid ol the Greymouth Competitions Society. The standard oi the acting in all respects was high. In the cast were Messrs Noel Bayley, W. McGrath, P J McGrath, and J. McDonald, and Misses Pat Knight, Doreen Donovan, and Thclma McDougall. Incidental music was provided by Miss Cecil Hanuan (piano), and Miss Cecilia Keating (violin). Valedictory Mr A. K. Smith, who will leave on Monday on transfer to the Cheviot branch" of Dalgety and Company, was met by members of the Greymouth Tennis Club, and presented with a leather suitcase. The presentation was made by Dr. H. S. Ray, who paid a tribute to the work done for the club by Mr Smith, and wished him every success in the future. Mr Smith replied. Personal

Miss B Burke has resigned her position as sister on the nursing stuff of the Grey Hospital. The Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy left to-day on his return to Beckenham. The Rev. Father Blake, S.M., of Si. Bede's College, Christchurch, will arrive to-day on a visit to the West Coast. Mr and Mrs R. S. Cochrane returned to-day from a holiday visit to Auckland. Mr and Mrs M. Thomson have returned from New Plymouth. Mr and Mrs N. Eggleton have returned from a visit to Christchurch

REEFTON PERSONAL (BPECI/.L *0 THE PRESS.I REEFTON, May 4. Mr K. Rogers, who has been in charge of Will's, Ltd,, Reefton, has accepted a position as manager of a store in Hastings. Mrs Fantharn, who has been visiting Reefton, has left on her return to Oxford. Rainfall The rainfall for April was 2.37 inches, falling on eight clays, with a maximum fall of .74 inches on April 11. . The rainfall for M.ay 1 was 1.48 inches. Fire About midday on Saturday, a fire broke out in an old two-roomed cottage, owned by Mrs Whitford, and occupied by a Chinese. The brigade was successful in saving the adjoining house. The building was extensively damaged, and %vas not covered by insurance. Warden's Court A sitting of the Warden's Court was held before Mr H. Morgan as warden The Conservator of Forests pro ceeded against the Blackwater Mines. Ltd., for £2225 18s 2d, being rents and royalties on timber. The case was adjourned sine die. A large number of mining applications were granted and 12 applications were recommended to the Minister for Mines (the Hon. C. E, Macmillan) for his consent. Magistrate's Court A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held before Mr H. Morgan, S.M. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in tne following civil cases:—J. McElwee and Sons v. Ernest Tattley, £7 16s 8d: Public Trustee v. Joseph Wearne and Elizabeth Wearne, £2 10s 3d. Albert Ernest Dawson was ordered to pay the Inangahua Hospital Board on a judgment summons £4 13s within 14 days, in default five days' imprisonment. Assessment Court Mr H. Morgan, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Assessment Cour}, when five objections to valuations of mining properties were heard. After evidence had been given, all the cases were adjourned. Boxing The Reefton Amateur Boxing Association held a successful tournament in the gymnasium, the following being the results:— C. Rayner (7st 111b) lost to J. Comerford <Bst 81b) on points. Oliver (Gst 51b) lost to Mathewson ißst 31b) on points. S. Higgins (9st. 31b) beat J. Brazil (9st lib). J. Higgins (lOst 131b) beat J. Page < lOst 91b) on points. M. Guy (7st 31b) beat N. Thurlow on points. K. McKane (4st 41b) drew with E. Newcombe (4st 71b). P. Zampesi <9st 71b) beat J. Lane <9st lib) on points. C. Elsmore beat T. Cox in a welterweight contest. R. Moynihan drew with M. Howson. HOKITIKA MAGISTRATE'S COURT (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS. 1 HOKITIKA, May 3. At the fortnightly meeting of the Magistrate's Court in Hokitika, Mr H Morgan, S.M., presided. William O'Brien was charged with driving a lorry without lights and with leaving it without excuse in a public place He was fined 10s on each charge. Four men were each fined 15s for being found on licensed premises after hours, one at the Commercial Hotel and one at the Dunedin Hotel, and two at the Red Lion Hotel. William Hall, licensee of the Dunedin Hotel, was fined £2 on a charge of selling liquor after hours. Frederick Hall was fined £2 for supplying liquor, being | other than the licensee. Outbreak of Fire The house of W. Shadbolt. in Fitzherbert street caught fire last evening about 9 o'clock, and the brigade were in time to save it from complete destruction. The fire started in the kitchen, which was completely destroyed. The rest of the house suffered damag<? from water and smoke. Mr and Mrs Shadbolt we're absent from Hokitika at the time. Old Pupils' Association The first annual meeting of the Hokitika District High School Expupils' Association was held in the Town Hall this week. The president, Mr J. L. Menzies, presided.

The report outlined what had been done since the formation of the association a year ago The number ,3f financial members was now 64 and it was pleasing to record the interest taken by former pupils in other parts! of New Zealand, some of whom were holding important positions. The need for active co-operation oi members resident in Hokitika was emphasised It was -hoped that the association would do something this year for the school. It was suggested that funds might be raised to provide a radiogramophone or a library. The president said that a blazer and badge had been adopted. Reference was made to the excellent work done by Miss E. Robinson as secretary. The balance-sheet showed a small fredil balance. The election of officers resulted:Patron. Mr G. A. Perry; president. Mr J. L. Menzi'es, vice-presidents. Messrs A. R. Elcock. W E. Williams and Miss 1 N. Chesterman; secretary. Miss E. Robinson, treasurer. Mr H. M. Coulson; auditor. Mr M. H. Houston; committee, Miss C. Linklater, and Messrs A. J. Keller. G. Belbridge, and E. Richards. It was resolved to send a letter to Mr E. Northcroft, an old boy of the school, congratulating him on his ap--pointment to the bench of the Supreme Court. Mr J. H. E. Schroder gave notice-ot (notion to alter the constitution of the association, extending membership privileges to all former pupils of both departments of the school.
