Torrential rains accompanied by gales which' have lashed Port Bahia (Brazil) in the last five clays have taken a toll of at least 400 lives, while several hundred were injured and more than 1000 are homeless. The authorities estimate that at least 00 were killed in the town. Five hundred buildings were demolished, including the Paris Hotel, overlooking the bay. The water caused repeated landslides in the higher ground surrounding the bay, while the lower sections are flooded. Railway and motor transport is held up, and communications with the outside world badly disrupted. The Government has declared a state of public calamity and volunteers and military forces are being mobilised for rescue work.
