HARBOUR LIGHT THEATRE

A comedy-romance of three sailors and a girl heads the special holiday programme to be screened at the Harbour Light Theatre this afternoon and evening. The picture is "She Learned About Sailors" and the stars are Alice Faye, Lew Ayres, and two comedians, Frank Mitchell and Jack Durant. A special attraction on the stage to-night will be the appearance of the ship's band of the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Mataroa. The band will play "Castles in Spain," march; "O K. Toots," from "Kid Millions ; "You, and the Night, and the Music, a slow fox-trot from the latest London musical comedy "Stop Press"; "The Sidewalks of Cuba," a rumba; and a specially composed number, 'Lets Have a Jubilee." The musical items will be interspersed with comedy patter. May Day Party The Excelsior Hall was filled on Saturday afternoon with happy children, on the occasion of the Lyttelton Plunket Society's annual children's May Day parly. Games were held, and a tambourine dance was given by the pupils of Miss Doris Swaby, and folk-dances by pupils of the Lyttelton District High School, trained by Miss J? Mcintosh. The Lyttelton Convent Orchestra, under the leadership of Mrs I. Donahoe, with Miss Freda Moir and Mr J. Partridge assisting, played selections, and music for the dancing was played by Mrs G. Brooke. Prizes for fancy costumes were given by Mr and Mrs H. H. H. Gardiner, Mesdames W. T. Lester, A. Gardiner, A. Bloom, T. Mahar, R. Shepherd, J. Shanley, F, Wilson, F. J. Tylee, Miss J. Mcintosh, and Mr E. Morse. The judges, Mesdames F» Holmes-Edge and A. G. Chnstie, selected Margaret Hammond as the May Queen, and, as maids of honour, Ngaire Collins, Camille Donahoe, Jean Geayley, Coyla Radcliffe, Valmai Sinclair, Rita Williams, and Mary Donahoe. Play will commence at 10.30 a.m. Old-time Dance There was a large attendance at the old-time dance arranged by the mittee of the West Lyttelton School, and held in the Excelsior. Hall, on Saturday evening. Music was provided by Mrs G. Brooke and prizes were distributed for novelty dances. Magistrate's Court At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Messrs W. D. Gower and J. N. Neville, justices of the peace, Robert Patterson, aged 49, an unemployed seaman, was charged with assaulting James Patrick Lee, another seaman. He pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given that Patterson had entered a hut in London street occupied by Lee and another man on Friday evening and had demanded the key. On being refused he assaulted Lee, and the two men rolled down the stairs. Lee went out on to the street, where Patterson again assaulted him, striking him on the mouth. Accused was convicted and fined £2 in default 14 days'- imprisonment.
