MOTOR RACING ON MURIWAI BEACH
LIEUTENANT KIDSTON WINS 'CHAMPIONSHIP .'PBESS 4.SSOCUTIO* TELEIJB.AJI.I AUCKLAND, May 5. High speeds were attained at motorcar races held by the New Zealand Motor Racing Drivers' Association at Muriwai beach on Saturday afternoon. An added thrill was provided for the spectators when a tiny single-seater supercharged Austin burst into flames. The New Zealand beach championship driver, G Smith, escaped injury, and the flames subsided after the car had been damaged to some extent. The mishap to the Austin, which was leading at the time, resolved the contest into a race between the redesigned single-seater Mercedes Benz, of Lieutenant H. R. A. Kidston, and R. A. Dexter's Brooklands Riley, which was also recently fitted with a single-seater body. Principal results were:— New Zealand Light Car' Cup (25 miles)—G. Smith" (Austin) 1, R, A. Dexter, jun.
