COUNCIL CANDIDATES As has been usual since New Brighton "was made a borough, the Mayor and council are inviting all candidates for the council to address the electors rj'i the eve of the poll. The Mayor, Mr E A. M. Leaver, will preside in the Put Hall on Tuesday. There are 22 candidate:. Jubilee IJonfire The New Brighton scout troop and the North Beach troop have combined to build a bonfire between central Brighton and North Beach in honour lit their Majesties' silver jubilee on Monday. The fire will be lit at 8 p.:n. Clock Tower The formal unveiling of the clock tower, which was to have taken place on Monday next, has again been indefinitely postponed, as the firm supplying the clock wishes that, it shall isot be placed in position until all work on the tower is completed. The Feast of St. George, patron of tin- Erujhsh. which fell this year on Monday, April 20, was observed at the parish church on .Sunday evening with the first evensong and procession, and on Monday morning with the euchatisl.

On Thursday evening the social part of the observance was kept with a concert and dance. In the capable hands of an energetic committee the parish hall was effectively decorated with English flov. English songs were sung by Mesdames Pearce and Scrimshaw, and Messrs R. Sampson and P. Duncan presided. ft was announced that. Mrs J. Rieharus. district peace superintendent, would give the address at the peace meeting later in the month. Mrs G. Ellis, who had attended the N'"W Zealand conference held in Dunedin recently, gave a comprehensive r-tport. There were 78 delegates present, and much business transacted. There had been an increase in the number of subscribers to the "White Ribbon." and great activity in work among the young people. Palmer presided at the monthly meet in;; of the Methodist Women's Guild. Final arrangements were made for the annual chrysanthemum show to be held on May 10 and 11, and it was decided to hold a social early in June. Workers' Educational Association The opening session of the New Brighton branch of the Workers' Educational .Association was held in the District High School on Monday. The tutor. Mr A. L. R. Neonan, gave th2 first of a series of lectures on psychology. Miss S. Foster was appointed secretary and Mr P. Nelson librarian. The nest lecture will be on May 13. Order of Rcchabitcs The Sunshine Juveniles of the 1.0. R. met in the band hall on Tuesday. The Chief Ruler, Sister J. Cusack, presided over a good attendance and four new members were initiated. The Star of New Brighton Tent met later. Chief Ruler, Bro. A. E. Cockle. presiding. Reports were received on the Anzac Day parade and the Medical Hospital Board. The social part of the evening was in charge of the married sisters and Sisters Weavers and Rogers will be in charge of the social part of the next meeting. Rugby Football An interesting game should be seen on the Rawhiti Domain this afternoon, when the third grade team of the New IMghton Rugbv Football Club will meet High School Old Boys. The other two grades will be playing in the city. Women's Hockey The Rawhiti Hockey Club's junior A ♦ earn will play Selvvyn on the Rawhiti Domain at 2.30 this afternoon, and will bu rcoresented by Misses Iris Jordan, Ngaire Cattermole, Evelyn Hamilton, Joan Tlndall, Irene Donohue, Mabel Fitchett, Evelyn Carmalt, Minnie Cock, Dorothy Moses, Jessie Lattimore. and Barbara Jones. NORTH BEACH PERSONAL Mr and Mrs D. S. Boyd and Mrs J. Bell (Osborne terrace), who have been spending a holiday at Otira, nave returned home. Mr and Mrs W. Short (Bowhill road) have returned from a motor tour of the Kast and West Coast. Mr and Mrs H. Irwin (Bowhill road), who have been spending their holidays at Peel Forest, have returned home. Mr and Mrs A. Mallock, who have be*n the guests of their daughter, Mrs ■Wilson (Waimate), have returned to their home in Norton street. Mr and Mrs C. W. Cooper (Grantley street) have returned from a holiday trip to Wakanui.

Silver Jubilee Celebrations j The committee of the North New | Brighton School is arranging a tree planting in honour of the King's jubilee. It v/ill be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, when a number of trees will be planted along the drive. The children will be presented with souvenir medallions. It is expected that several short, addresses suitable to the occasion will be given. The parents and general public are invited to attend the function. Card Party The weekly card party in aid of the Aranui Hall funds was held on Thursday evening. Messrs E. Rowse and G. K. McCaw were in charge. The winners were Mrs W. Jones, Messrs A. E. Young, R. Moody, and G. K. McCaw. Burgesses' Association At a meeting of the executive of the Aranui Burgesses' Association held during the week, it was decided that as the annual meeting fell on election day, it should be postponed until Wednesday, May 15. Ratepayers' Meeting The annual meeting of the ratepayers in the.Aranui Hall loan area will be held in the hall on Tuesday evening, when the report and balance-sheet wil be presented.
