CANTERBURY WINS SHIELD SUCCESSES IN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS OTAGO THE RUNNER-UP (PRESS iSSOCIATIOJf TELKCUtAM.) DUNEDIN, April 23. By winning three championships in the lawn tennis section and the tennis cup, Canterbury University College won the inter-University tournament shield by three-quarters of a point. Canterbury's total points were 20i, Otago University being runnerup with 19J-. Auckland had 14£, and Victoria University College was last with eight. . Canterbury won the men's single championship, when Duffield beat Gosnell (Auckland), and followed this up with the women's singles, Miss Wauchop defeating Miss Betty Fraser (Otago). Two- Canterbury pairs contested the final of the men's doubles, and Otago lost its chance of the shield when Miss Betty Fraser and Miss J. Riley were beaten in the women's doubles by the Auckland pair, Misses Gardner and McKinnon. Canterbury was defeated in the mixed doubles by Victoria. Results:Men's Singles Final B. D. Final Miss Edwards and Morrison beat Miss Gerard and Walls, 6-2, 6-3. SWIMMING EVENTS' OTAGO WINS THE SHIELD (MLX3Z tSiOCUTIO* TULBMiU.) DUNEDIN, April 23. In the swimming section of the University tournament last night, Otago won four of the eight championships and the relay race, thereby annexing the shield. D. H. Symes was the outstanding swimmer of the carnival. The Canterbury champion won the 100 yds, 220 yds, and 440 yds championships for Otago and was a member of the winning relay team. Miss Rees Jones, of Otago, established a university record of 93sec in the 100 yds women's breaststroke, while the 220 yds men's breaststroke university record was lowered by Horsfall in 3min 20 3-ssec.
