UMBRELLAS AND COATS

MANY VISITORS TO RICCARTON EASTER MEETING CONCLUDED The buoyance and good spirits of racegoers are remarkable. They will rise above the most depressing conditions and turn disheartening circumstances into a pleasant adventure. And so it was with the goodly crowd of patrons who attended the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting at Riccarton yesterday. The rain on the previous night and in the early morning, which probably deterred some persons from attending, caused the women enthusiasts to don warm frocks and raincoats, and to bring forth, from their summer seclusion, goloshes and umbrellas. Thus equipped, they arrived at the racecourse, where a pleasant surprise awaited them. From noon until nearly 3 o'clock conditions were very pleasant. Though the clouds were threatening no rain fell; there was no wind, and it was not cold. Raincoats in a surprising variety of colours —white, cream, catkin yellow, red, green, and spotted—were laid aside, and many trim suits, worn with gay scarves and bags, made a welcome appearance. But just before the fifth race the weather changed for the worse. There was a decided drop in the temperature, and heavy rain began to fall. The cosy comfort of warm wraps was eagerly sought, and few ventured from the shelter of the stands, even the members of the New Brighton Municipal Band, whose music was most enlivening, rushing for cover.

A surprising fact, showing the comparative trend of speculation, was disclosed yesterday. After the fifth race £13,012 had passed through the totalisator —exactly the same amount as had been handled by the machine after the fifth race on Easter Tuesday last year.
