The Christchurch Public Library has experienced an exceptionally busy period during Easter. Last Thursday 1581 books were taken out by subscribers for home reading. Of that total 257 books came from the juvenile section. On Saturday, when the library was open for a few hours only, 455 books were taken out. Fifteen new subscribers have been enrolled in two days. The reference library has been in equally keen demand. On Thursday 439 books were used by visitors to the reference. section and on Saturday 400. So far this week the demand has been sustained at well above the normal level, and yesterday, because of the rain, no doubt, the demand was extraordinary. While the "strength" of France's army of holiday visitors fell to 700,000 last year from 2,125,000 seven years ego, Britain entertained 288,598 foreign visitors—2B,ooo more than the previous year—in addition to 100,000 tourists from the Dominions.
