FIGHTING ON INDIAN FRONTIER
BRITISH OFFICIAL KILLED CALCUTTA, Apiyl 11. The turbulent North-West Frontier again claimed the life of a British official yesterday, Mr Leslie William Hazlett Duncan Best, political agent in Malakand, was shot and fatally wounded by tribesmen at Agra, Malakand. Mr Best was killed in the operations against hostile tribesmen led by Fakir Ali of Alingar, known as the Mad Fakir.
British and Indian troops of the Nowshera column attacked the raiders, who numbered 900, with the object of driving them back over the Swat river. Royal Air Force aeroplanes bombed and machinegunned the tribesmen's positions, after which troops occupied the village of Loe, in Agra. The tribesmen put up a stubborn resistance, in which Mr Best was killed. Several soldiers were injured. KILLED WHILE ON PEACE MISSION (Received April 14, 8.3 p.m.) LONDON, April" 14. The Peshawar correspondent of the "Daily Mail" says Mr Best, who was 35 years of age, escorted by six men, rode out as the forces approached with a view to meeting the tribesmen and negotiating with them to prevent large scale fighting. He was ambushed and killed and three of his escort wounded. : I
