It can remain in that state for several years, but, in the case of soils containing much iron and aluminium, the phosphate tends to revert to a much less soluble form, and consequently is difficult of access by the plants. (2) Much of the superphosphate would be used in plant growth, and there would be only a small proportion of this benefit left after three years. (3) The effect of superphosphate is to increase growth both above and below the ground. There is, therefore, a considerable increase in root development. It is known also that superphosphate tends to increase the proportion of leguminous plants growing in the pasture, and in their turn, besides adding extra root growth, improves the soil by the addition of nitrogen. It therefore enriches the ground. The effect of applying superphosphate improves the palatibility of the pasture, and therefore more is eaten and returns to the soil.
