That the granting of complimentary licenses to country constables would help to check the activities of unlicensed fishers and shooters was the opinion expressed by Mr W. J. H. Haase at a meeting of the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society " week. Mr Haase said that when the constables were given licenses they visited the rivers, but when the licenses were withheld they did not do so and unlicensed persons became more active. He moved that a limited number of complimentary licenses should be issued to constables in sole-charge country stations. Mr A. Seed suggested' that the matter should be held over until there was a much fuller attendance. If licenses were to be granted he recommended a limit of five, subject to review before the opening of each season. Mr Haase said that the matter should be decided at once, as the constables would be ' able to give assistance at the opening of the shooting season.
