CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING

TWO MORE CLUBS OPEN

THE SEASON

PACK RUNS OVER SHORT TRIALS

Two more clubs—Methodist and Marist—opened the cross-country season on Saturday afternoon with short training runs over light, flat country. Both clubs have fine prospects for the 1935 season. Marist, the newlyformed pack, is reported to have 20 members, ancl intends to enter in all or practically all open events. The Methodist Club will be strong in membership again. It had practically the whole of its 1934 team out at its first run, together with a number of new members, and with any good fortune, it may improve its position this year on the inter-club ladder. The Methodist packs covered six miles in Bryndwr, Waimairi, and Harewood, running easily, mainly along roads. C. S. Ell, G. R. Clothier, N. P.

G. li. WATSON | Alcorn, and several others of! the club's racing men were out again, and among the new members who showed promise was D. G. Silvester, who scored a number of points for the Civil Service Amateur Athletic Club during the track season. Alcorn was unlucky in suffering an injury to his foot, and could not complete the distance. He may be forced to miss one or two runs. The Marist packs included a number of runners entering winter athletics for the first time, and a number of juniors, among whom there was a good deal of promising material. The Chrislchurch Club continued its programme with an easy run over five and a half miles in Marshland and Shirley. R. Rogers, the Canterbury junior champion, made his first appearance of the season and ran well. T. Bartlctt, who intends to be a serious competitor in open events this year, also turned out and ran third to G. 11. Walson and L. E. Fo>:. Both Watson and Fox have begun the season well. They, together with Rogers, liarlletl, and two more out of the club's large number of promising racing men. will form a strong team this season.
