NOTES ON THE RACING

! (SPBCIJIL TO TSLR r*ESB.I INVJSRCARGILL, April 14. Led All The Way 1 Valarth led practically all the way in the Crown Stakes and had the finish to himself. He was followed by Waipounamu and Vavemai to the ' straight, but both stopped badly, and Red Terror finished on to beat Tautau Maid for second money. Ocean Singer - was chopped out at the start, and the I favourite, King Willow, was never ) dangerous. 1 By a Head Tritoma was never further back I than third in the Wallace Harness Trot, and after looking an all over winner at the distance just scraped i home by a head from the favourite, 1 Vacation, Seamark made the running for about a mile, and then Leitrim took charge, but both stopped in the straight, and Chief Drusus came from well back to finish third. Seamark was fourth. It was the winner's first j; race, and he is a nice cut of a three-year-old by Frank Dewey from . Azaleas. , r Decisive Win The Otautau Cup was won decis--1 ively by Grand Finale. First Song and • Totolomai forced the pace from the start, and with five furlongs to go they were three lengths clear of Venite, while Grand Finale was another four lengths away. Totolomai , was beaten three furlongs from home, and First Song was in trouble at the home turn, where Venite took charge from Grand Finale and Ramo moved up. In the run home Grand Finale always had the measure of Venite and > won going away. Ramo was close up third, and Water Power was four 1 lengths away fourth. It was an ex- ' cellent trial on the part of the winner for the Riverton Cup. First Song pulled hard and beat himself. Ramo ran his best race for a long time, and only the winner finished better than him. Water Power made up a lot of ground over the last half-mile and is i a likely improver also. The Smuggler t was at the rear of the field through- > out. ' A Hard Finish Silk Paper, an odds-on favourite, i led ail the way in the Ringway Handicap and beat Clara Bow in a hard ' finish. The latter was having her first • race for some time and was not disgraced. Auraline was prominent in third place with three furlongs to go, but stopped in the straight, and Sil- ' made up a lot of ground in the run home to finish third. Slaemish was the only other horse in the i picture and was a bad fourth. i i A Good Race 1 Twelve contested the Otautau Stee- ' plechase, and it was a good race, with ' outsiders fighting out the finish. French Fleet tried to win all the way and l was out by himself until he fell at - the log fence, about a mile from home, i Red Lancer was then left in charge, and although displaced by Nylotis, he went to the front again at the second to last fence, and stayed on to beat Towing in a good finish. Nylotis was a good third, after covering extra i ground fi'om the last fence, and Quin- < opal and Ecclefechan were next. It 1 was the winner's second start over " fences, and he gave an excellent display. He is a stable-mate of the cup i winner, Grand Finale. Towing shaped well for a beginner, and Nylotis thret' a erfs to stage a comeback. Quinopal , ran a good race for a couple of miles, but was very sore. Royal Limond baulked at the brush fence at the end of a mile, and although he carried on he was never happy at his fences, and gave D. O'Connor a rough side. Para--1 sang was very indifferently handled. 2 Trisox fell at the first fence. ' The Saddle Trot s Pncha made most of the running in u the Bayswater Saddle Trot from Park Drive, and the latter finished solidly

to beat off a strong challenge by the favourite. Picotee. Pacha stopped into third place, and Silver Guy was next The latter had every chance, and so did Chief Drusus. Won Easily The Orari-trained Epris bolted home in the Strathmore Handicap. He was first out but was soon displaced try Jacobin, with Beam in close attendance. Jacobin and Epris were well clear at the top of the straight, wfaero the latter came right away and won in his best style. Slaemish best Jacobin just as easily for second, and then came Silk Paper and Acla. The winner set a hard task, and there was a lot of merit in his performance. Beam failed to run on, but is a likely improver. A Two-horse Finish Toreador and tfotolomai had the finish of the Macaulay Memorial to themselves, and the former stayed on better to win by a head. The favourite. Great Shot, set a solid pace out in front for six furlongs and then stopped into fourth place. Niggerhead was a poor third, and Hystnde ran a bad race.
