MARKET FOR PIGS

'restriction on porkers STATEMENT BY MEAT PRODUCERS' BOARD The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board recently drew attention to the great need for farmers arranging to convert as large a percentage of pigs into the baconer class as possible. Concerning the quota fixed by the s British Government for the . present !. short-term ' period—arrivals April. c May, and June, 1935—the stocks of porker pigs in store in New Zealand at March 31, and which will be available for shipment to arrive in the United Kingdom before June 30, will be sufficient to fill our quota for this period. Accordingly the Minister for 1 Agriculture, acting on the advice of i the Meat Board, has notified all fieezing companies that porker pigs killed I after March 31 may not be shipped to . arrive in the United Kingdom until after June 30. Comparison on the Market The board has on previous occasions pointed out that the imported baconer trade into the United Kingdom ab- - sorbs approximately 1* times more , than the imported porker trade. New Zealand's share of this baconer trade 1 is relatively insignificant, whereas her - share of the imported porker trade is > substantial. The New Zealand Government and the board have been successful in ob- ' taining an adequate quota for New ' Zealand baconers for arrival in the ■' United Kingdom during the calendar year 1935, the quantity fixed for this •' period of 12 months being 12,500 tons. From a consideration of the fore- - going facts it will be seen that farl mors should make their plans to carry - on to the baconer class as large a ) percentage of their pigs as possible, • states the board.
