GREYMOUTH | MAGISTRATE'S COURT . (special to the mass.) GREYMOUTH, April 9. At yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court Mr H. Morgan, S.M., presided. Senior-Sergeant E. Quayle represented the police. A first offender for drunkenness was fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. For riding unlighted cycles after sunset Harold Webster and John Bluett were each fined ss, with orders for costs. For driving a lorry at Ngahere on March 16, without being the holder of a driver's license, Kenneth Becker was fined £l, and ordered to pay costs. Eugene Charles O'Reilly was convicted and ordered to pay 10s costs for riding a motor-cycle without a license, and Phillip James Duffy was fined £3 and ordered to pay 10s costs for failing to keep to the left when driving a motor-car. For allowing a bull to wander at Cobden on March 12, John Bourke (Mr M. B. James) and Charles Bourke wero each fined 10s and ordered to pay costs.

Pleading guilty to stealing a pair o 1 boots, valued at 255, the property o Bverard Wick, on February 14, a Maori Gully, Carl Todd, was convicte< and ordered to come up for sentence i called upon within six months, and als< to pay costs. Llewellyn John Williams (Mr T. F Brosnan) was charged with the dis obedience of an order for the mainten ance of his wife, for whom Mr M. B James appeared. Cyclist Injured As the result of his cycle skiddinj on the railway lines at the Cobder quarry, the Rev. Brother Maurice hac a nasty fall, in which the end of the handlebars entered the back of the right hand, inflicting a wound which required live stitches. He was attended by Dr. W. A. Bird. Grey District Miners The election of president of the Grey District Miners' Central Committee, necessitated by the death of Mr J. K. Connel, resulted in Mr B. Fisher, of Runanga, being elected. Mr H. Johnston, Runanga, was elected as delegate to the National Council. These were the only nominations received for each position, and both were from the State Miners' Union. The returning officer was Mr R. Clark, of Blackball. Doctor's Appeal An appeal against th: decision of Mr H. Morgan, S.M., has been lodged by Dr. J. W. Bridgman against his conviction on a charge of assault, in the Magistrate's Court recently. The appeal has been set down for hearing at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Greymouth. Borough Elections Mr F. E. Stent, of Blaketown, has announced that he will contest a seal on the Greymouth Borough Council al the municipal elections.

Miner Injured Mr Robert McTaggart, of Runanga, employed with Duggan and party, cooperative miners, received a double fracture of the right arm yesterday morning, when a piece of coal, weighing about 121b, fell from the mine bins as he was closing the coal chute. He was attended by Dr. G. W. Meade, of Runanga, and taken to the Grey Hospital, and after treatment was able to go home. REEFTON MINER INJURED (SFICUL ro THE TEESa.I REEFTON, April 9. Mr A. Clark, sen., one of the contractors for the Cumberland mine, received serious injuries to a leg, as the result of being kicked by a horse. The horse got into difliculites and in its struggles struck Clark on the leg. Obituary The death occurred at Reefton Hospital of Mr James Coll, a well-known and much respected resident of Cronadun. Mr Coll had been an inmate of the hospital for a few weeks. He was a native of Sydney and was 65 years of age. He is survived by three sisters, : Mesdames D. Scott (Reefton), Wilsoncroft (Westport), and C. Sweetman . (Greymouth). and four brothers, ; Messrs John and Dominic (Reefton), ■ and Hugh and Patrick (Nelson Creek). Farewell to Minister I There was a very large attendance • at the Wesley Hall, when the Rev. A. . P. Dorrian was given a farewell social. . Mr A. Bolitho, in presenting Mr Dor-' , rian with an envelope containing bank , notes, referred to the good work 'that i he had accomplished, Other speakers l were: Captain Armstrong (Salvation Army), and. the Rev. Fairlie Evans (Presbyterian Church). In reply, Mr Dorrian thanked all for their kind „ words and handsome gift, and said I he hoped that the. church would conJ tinue to prosper. A number of vocal t and instrumental items and recitations were given during the evening.

Schools' Essay The secretary of the Inangahua Agricultural and Pastoral Association na» received from Mr J. Metson, of Westport, the result of the schools' essay competition, held by the association. The subject was "The Duke of Gloucester's Visit," and the awards were ■ as follows :--Secondary schools, Miss Pat Delaney (Inangahua Junction School) 1, Miss Patricia Pratt (Reefton District High School) 2. Primary schools: Miss Mavis Cook (Inangahua Junction) 1, Miss Pauline O'Regan (Cronadun) 2. ; Bible Class Camp The Young People's Bible classes , will hold, an encampment at Reefton at Easter, when members from all the West Coast classes will be present The Presbyterian Young Women's classes will camp at the Reeftop school, and > the Methodist men's classes at tha Black's Point school. The camps will open on Thursday, April 18, and close on Monday, April 22. Ford, Byrne, and Phillips scored. Mr G. Harris was referee. A junior match was also played at Waiuta, Mawheraiti beating Waiuta by 6 points to 5. Mr J. Letham was referee.
