As already announced the new pictorial issue will be placed on sale at all post offices on May 1. Aji issue of three stamps will be made to commemmorate the silver 1 jubilee of King George, and there >5- will also be ar: issue for Island de*T pendencies. The denominations of the new pictorial stamps are as follows: Id, Id, lid, 2d, 2id, 3d, 4d, sd, 6d, lid, 9d, Is, 2s, 3s. With the issue of the new stamps the Post and Telegraph Department is arranging to supply a .series of six specially printed envelopes—known to philatelists as "First Day Covers"-—for use on the first day of ■ issue only of the new stamps. Typical views and wording appropriate to the occasion will appear on the left half of the address side of each envelope, and a leaflet descriptive o£ the nqw stamps will be enclosed. The "First Day Covers" will be specially hand-date-stamped at Wellington on May 1, so that it is essential for all persons desiring to use the service to have addressed envelopes in Wellington not later than April 30. Other New Issues In addition to the "jubilee" issue of three stamps, it is now announced that a "jubilee" series of the denominations Id, 2Jd, and 6d, will be issued for the Island dependencies, i.e., the Cook Islands, Niue, and Samoa. The stamps will comprise the current Id. 2id, and 6d values, suitably overprinted, and in the case of the Cook Islands and Niue with the centres printed in new colours. The stamps will be placed on sale in the respective islands and at the Chief Post Offices at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, on May 7 next.

The department had expected before this to make a new air-mail issue of three denominations. The matter of making the issue is now in abeyance, however, due to the changing conditions in the air-mail field. Approval has been given for an air-mail to be carried by East Coast Airways, Ltd., on the inaugural flights between Gisborno and Napier, and between Napier and Gisborne of the company's proposed new regular air service. The inaugural flights—one in each direction—will take place on April 16. Departure will be taken from Gisborne at 7 a.m.; Napier arrive at 8 a.m.; Napier depart 11 a.m.; Gisborne arrive noon. The combined postage and airmail fee for letters will be 3d a halfounce an article. A limited number of special envelopes is being made available by the promoters of the flights, and a distribution will be made of these to chief post offices for handing to persons enquiring for them.
