NEW BRIGHTON NOTES

MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS With the municipal elections only a little more than four weeks away interest is growing in the promised contests. To date there are two announced candidates for the Mayoralty, Cr Ernest L. Smith and Cr. J. K. Worrali whilst the Mayor (Mr E. A. M, Leaver) on Tuesday informed a deputation that in view of the improvement in his health he would give a definite decision this week as to whether he would offer himself for re-election. So far 12 candidates have publicly announced themselves as candidates for the council, and two members of the present council informed "The Press" yesterday that: (hey would seek re-election, and Crs. J. K. Worrali R E. Ilollowav. and W. Hulme have stated that they would not seek reelection. Mrs W. L. A. Taylor J. Orsborn, and W. E. Wilkin have not yet reached a definite decision, and £rs. J. S. There are therefore at present 14 declared candidates and three possible ones for the nine seats.

Mothers' Union The monthly meeting of the St. Faith s branch of the Mothers' Union opened in the church with the Rev. Kenneth Scholar officiating at the service. Mrs A. Scholar was the presiding member at the subsequent, meeting in the parish hall. A talk was given by Mrs T. Hamilton. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames L. It. Hurrell. C. J. Rainey, and R. Hargrove. The next meeting will beheld on Wednesday, April 24, instead of on the following clay. As Monday was the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the festival of the Mothers' Union members attended the first, evensong on Sunday. The service was conducted by the Rev. K. Scholar and was' followed by a procession. Kclunied Soldiers' Association Mr G. Marsh 'president) was in the chair at a meeting of the local subbranch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, held in the club room, on Tuesday. It was reported that for the annual meeting to be held on April 16 there were three nominations for the presidency, and 22 for 10 seats on the executive. Arrangements were made for holding Poppy Day in the borough. The arrangements for Anzuc Day are to be left in the hands of the Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver). The offer of the lessee of Joylancl Theatre to screen a benefit picture on Anzac night was accepted. St. Faith's To-morrow being "Mothering Sunday" there will be a special family Eucharist at 11 a.m. Posies will be blessed at the altar and distributed to children for presentation to their mothers. Card Evenings At the progressive whist evening held in the bowling club pavilion on Tuesday, Mr J. Marriott and Mrs E. W. Christiansen were the successful players. The Tuesday 500 evening was held in the Catholic School, Lonsdale.- street. Mesdames A. E. Nesbitt, A. O'Loughlin, and Mr T. O'Keci'e were the winners, and Mrs Nesbitt won the travelling prize.

The Returned Soldiers' Association card evening and dance was held in Joyland annexe on V/cdnesday. At cards the winners were Mesdames R. Scott and C. Brcitmeyer and Messrs T. Jack and R. Potter. Mr 11. McGregor won the competition. The dance music was played by Mrs H. Ross-Smith, assisted by Mr F. Arnold, and Mr R. D. Kennedy was mrster of ceremonies.

Mrs R. Bach, Mrs W. S. Langley, and Mrs H. Barr were the prize winners at the weekly bridge tournament held in the croquet club pavilion on Thursday.

The prize winners at the wocklv euchre held in the District High School on Thursday were Mesdames L. Frost, C. Bodgcr, L. Brcitmeyer (special), and Messrs J. H. Merritt, J. Grealey, and F. W. Larcombe (special). Bowls The .season of the New Brighton Bowling Club will end to-day, when rinks tournaments will be played, and visitors from many outside clubs have arranged to take part. Women's Inter-borough Cricket The following women's cricket team will represent New Brighton against Sumner, at Sumner, to-day:—R. liulme (captain), D. Moses, A. Moses. M. Rondel, M. Cook, B. Cook, E. Peters, E. Smith, M. Gudge, I. Jordan G. Banfield. Twelfth player: M. Smith. Forthcoming Events To-day the Kindergarten Association branch will hold a jumble sale in the borough. The inter-borough sports with Sumner will be held on the domain sports ground, and the Power Boat Club and Metropole Club will hold dances. Over the week-end both sections of the Rawhiti Golf Club play matches. NORTH BEACH liN fERTAINMENT Oil Wednesday afternoon an entertainment was given by the MarionetteEntertainers in the school. The programme consisted of musical items, cartoon sketches, juggling tricks, and other items.

Surf Club The social committee of the North Beach Surf Club, in response to numerous requests, will hold another twilight dance in the North Beach Hall this evening. New decorations and attractions have been arranged. The music will be played by Butler's Serenaders. Missionary Lecture Miss Bradfield, a missionary on furlough from India, gave a lecture illustrated with lantern views on missionary work in the Baptist Church on Thursday evening. In the absence of the Rev._ E. W. Grigg, Mrs S. G. Goring presided. At the conclusion of the address Mesdames S. G. Goring and A. Noonan thanked M ; ?s Bradfield for her lecture. The proceeds of the lecture were in aid of mission work. Community SingingThe Burwood School Committee has decided to hold a number of social evenings during the winter months to raise money for the school funds. The first, held on Thursday, took the form of a community sing and dance. Mr R. Harrison was leader of the singing and Mrs W. B. Willoughby played the piano. An exhibition tap dance was give)! by Mr B. Blackmore and solos by Mr R. Harrison. Mr R. C. Vincent was master of ceremonies for the dance. Card Evening: The weekly euchre party was held in aid of the funds of the Aranui Hall committee on Thursday. Messrs E. Rouse and L. _ Nankivell were in charge. The winners were Mesdames A. Young and G. Spencer and Messrs A. Young and C. Bloom. Football Club The _ opening of the season of the Aranui Football Club will be held at the club's grounds, Avondale road, this , afternoon at 2.30 o'clock. 1
