♦ < TEMPERANCE UNION j | The monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held at St. Giles' Sunday School on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Graham presided. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the Rev. E. Bandy was carried. A presentation was made to Mrs Hopper, who will leave the district soon. Mrs Graham spoke of the work Mrs Hopper had done for the union, and expressed regret at her departure. On behalf of the branch Mrs Graham presented Mrs Hopper with a fireside companion set. Mrs Haynes spoke on j behalf of the Band of Hope, and Miss jFay Howard presented a bouquet. | Other speakers were Mrs Barrell I (Riccarton and North Canterbury Unions) and Mrs J. Simpson. Items were given by Mrs Marwick (recitation) and Miss V. Black (vocal solo). Mrs Barrell gave an address on the workings of the various departments of the union. A cake and produce I stall was held to raise funds, and was successful. Card Evenings The Papanui Horticultural Society held the weekly card evening in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday. The winners were:—Mrs G. Owen 1, Mrs J. L. Neilsen 2, Mrs W. W. Taylor and Mrs D. Roberts, equal, 3. The weekly card evening was held by the Advance Northcote Association on Tuesday, in the women's section Mrs J. Sharkey and Mrs J. Munro tied for first place. In the men's section, Mr Hubert won, Mr E. Fielding and Mr B. Lange tied for second place. In the play-off Mr Lange won. School Carnival A concert was held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday evening to raise funds in the interests of the green queen (Miss Doreen Wolfe) at to-dav's carnival at the Papanui School. Songs, hakas, and poi dances were given by a party of Maoris from Tuahiwi, under Mr Te Ari Pitama, and tap dancing items by pupils of Mr Eddie Hegan. Mr and Mrs A. Robinson, members of the green queen committee, enter-

tained friends at a social evening at their home, Tutton's road, on Monday. Games and competitions were greatly enjoyed. Mr H. Simpson won the card section. The gathering made arrangements for the final rally this afternoon. Farewell Sermon The Rev. A. E. Hopper will preach his farewell sermon to-morrow at the Methodist Church. Mr Hopper has i been minister in charge at Papanui lor seven years and will leave soon ior Auckland. Returned Soldiers' Association At a meeting cf the Papanui subcommittee of the Returned Soldiery Association held in the Memorial Hall on Monday evening, Mr A. E. Haynes presided. Arrangements were made to hold a variety concert early in May. The Christchurch executive wrote asking the committee to make arrangements for the sale of popples. The committee decided to undertake the work. Arrangements were made for the memorial service at 11 a.m. on Anzac Day. A parade of returned men will take place a quarter of an hour before the service. All the local minister are invited to take part. The Rev. T. 3Lawrence, who is a returned soldier, will give the address.
