SEWERAGE PUMPING STATIONS COMPLETION EXPECTED IN A MONTH (SPBCLiL *0 TEE P*ES3.I BLENHEIM, March 27. A meeting of the Blenheim Borough Council was held this evening, the Mayor (Mr M. McKenzie) presiding. The engineer, in reporting on the sewerage scheme, said that the pumping stations at Bradford quay, Bridge street, and George street, | would be completed within a month. It was decided to give two months' notice to householders in these areas to connect up as the stations became ready. The Mayor's action in opening shilling lists to provide the local quota for the cost of Lord Bledisloe's portrait was approved. Contracts for sanitary services and cleaning the co-operative drain were granted to John- Kelly and T. B. Stacey respectively. A letter was received from the Blenheim Golf Club asking for the use of Pollard Park at a reduced rental. The matter was referred to the reserves committee. Plans were submitted by Mr J. Adams for the subdivision of his building in Market street into three shops, and a permit was granted. A permit was also granted to subdivide into three shops the original hardware department of Carr's building in Market street south. Personal His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy, and Mrs Kennedy arrived from Nelson this afternoon and are staying at the Criterion Hotel. Mr Justice Kennedy will be attending a sitting of the Supreme Court, which will resume to-morrow. Mr V. C. Constant, accompanied by Miss E. Constant and Miss F. Grubb, left yesterday on a short visit to Dunedin. Obituary Mr Walter Smith, aged 70 years, died suddenly yesterday. He was well known as one of Blenheim's last hansom cab proprietors, and was for many years clerk of the course for the Marlborough Racing Club. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family of three sons and one daughter—Mrs C. A. Webster (Picton), and Messrs William Smith (Wellington), Percy Smith (Hamilton), and Arthur Smith (Seddon). The funeral will take place at the Omaka cemetery to-morrow morning. Building Society The} Marlborough Co-operative Building Society (Starr Bowkett) held a ballot in both groups this evening. Mr K. Gascoigne obtained £7OO in No. 1 group, and Mr J. B. McCallum £2OO in No. 2 group. Netting and Trawling Criticised At the annual meeting of the Sounds branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, reference was made to the Government's decision, giving permission to use Danish seine nets, and to permit trawling in certain parts of the sounds this year. A resolution was passed taking strong exception to trawling and seine netting being allowed inside the mouth of the Sounds. Cricket Matches for Saturday Senior grade cricket matches to be played next Saturday are: Picton v. Awatere, Tuamarina v. Wairau, Kiwi B v. Marshlands, Kiwi A a bye.
