The reduction in school committees' allowances granted by the Wellington Education Board has resulted in the board receiving several letters of protest. At a meeting last week, the chairman, Mr W. V. Dyer, read a reply which lie had drafted and in which it was stated that the board was under no option but to make the reductions. The average daily attendance, upon which capitation was based, had fallen since the increasing of the school entrance age, but cleaning, easily the biggest item in a school committee's budget, remained practically constant whether a school rose or fell in grade as a result of a fluctuating attendance. Committees. Mr Dyer pointed out, were receiving from the board every penny provided under the Government scale, with a share of pooled funds and additional grants. What was unsound was the principle upon which capitation was granted.
