BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir— Kindly permit me to make a public protest against the excessive and quite unnecessary burden that is being placed upon the shoulders e par'ents of pupils attending the t5 y High School. , j My own sons (3) matriculated, ana found for instance that two Fiench 'books were sufficient for that subject, but my grandson attending the isoy High School has been told to get seven (some of which will seldom, if ever, be opened) at a cost of £1 4s. should be, and probably is, well known that many parents are not in a position to pay that amount for books for subject only. If this is designed to exclude children of poor parents, then it reflects very little credit upon those responsible for such a state of affairs. Perhaps it is considered preposterous on their part to attempt to enter circles evidently intended for those more plentifully endowed with this world's goods. Will Mr Lancaster tell us whether the expense is incurred with his knowledge and approval; and further, has the standard of efficiency of the staff deteriorated to such an extent as to make so many extraneous aids necessary? The charge of £1 Is per annum (there are I believe 600 pupils) towards the sports fund, as well as a charge of 2s 6d for the use of a locker, is outrageous. Were the results in keeping with the expense there would be some satisfaction, tfut unfortunately they are not, as other high schools carried on at a much more reasonable cost give quite as good and in some cases better results.—Yours, etc., A GRANDFATHER. February 13. 1935. [Mr G. J. Lancaster, headmaster of the Boys' High School, when this letter was referred to him, said that he did not think any comment was necessary.]
