"Population." Vol. I, Number 3, the Journal of the International Union for the Scientific Investigation of Population Problems, opens with a brief but comprehensive study by Professor Fawcett of the trend of population in the Englishspeaking countries from the "areas of relatively low density to the already thickiy inhabited areas of concentration—a complete reversal of the trend of last century."—Allen and Unwin. (2s 6d net.) The December issue of "Oceania," Vol. V, No. 2, is notable for two essays on research in Buin (Bougainville, New Guinea) by Richard and Hilde Thurnwald. "Pigs and Currency in Buin'' consists of observations upon primitive standards of value and economics; Mrs Thurnwald's paper is devoted to the status of women in Buin society.—Australian National Research "Council.
