REOPENING OF SCHOOLS

* ROLL NUMBERS WELL MAINTAINED EXACT FIGURES NOT YET AVAILABLE The first term of the new year has eilready begun at most of the secondary schools in Christchurch, and children and teachers at the primary schools began work yesterday. Head- ; masters have in some cases been busy for a day or two past enrolling and classifying new pupils, and there is still a good deal of this work to be done before the term can begin in earnest. At the primary schools it is generally expected that roll numbers will be well maintained. Some schools reported an increase over last year in enrolments of new pupils. I Mr G. J. Lancaster, headmaster of I the Boys' High School, said yesterday I that the number of new pupils at the | school was much the same this year as last year, being approximately 190. It was not possible, however, to give an estimate of the total roll number, as ' there were boys who had been placed in temporary or permanent jobs during the holidays and the proportion of these to return to school might affect the total. An increase in the total roll number, consisting mainly of day boys, was reported at Christ's College where there will be approximately 315 pupils this year. No estimate was available 'at St. Andrew's College, but it is expected that the numbers will be as good as. if not better than, those last yea:'. I iie Technical Coliese An aii round increase in the numbers of pupils in every course provided at the Christchurch Technical College was reported by the principal of the college, Dr. D. E. Hansen. More than 100 more first year pupils are entering the college this year than last year, and there are more boys taking the courses in engineering, agriculture, commerce, and building. The term does not begin actually till to-morrow, but by yesterday about 550 new day-school pupils had been enrolled. It was still a little doubtful howj many of last year's pupils would return, said Dr. Hansen, as there were a number of those who had not secured positions last year who might have been placed during the holidays It was to be hoped that all those who had not gained positions would return to the college and remain till they could iind work, since if they kept in touch with the college they could be recommended with greater confidence Ihc indications were that the total roll this year would be larger.
