Less rigorous summer conditions on Mount Egmont have encouraged many casual climbing parties to make ascents to the summit recently. There is now practically no snow on the mountain and an ascent can be made entirely on scoria and rocks. Last week-end the mountain was climbed from all three centres, Stratford. Dawson Falls and North Egmont houses. One enterprising party on the.Hawera side, escaped the heat and bother of a 5000 ft climb in the sun by timing their climb to reach the summit at midnight. Another party, under Mr Rod Syme, elected to watch the sunrise from the crater. An Inglewood party made a more conventional ascent in daylight, and from North Egmont a party of 18, all members of a Post and Telegraph Department picnic party from Inglewood, were not afraid to use up energy by making the trip in three and a half hours. Heat haze on the plains, however, spoiled the usually magnificent panorama that is the reward of most ascents.
