NATIONALISATION OF BANKS OPPOSED
♦ CANADIAN MINISTER'S STATEMENT (Received February 5, 10.50 p.m.) OTTAWA, February 4. Opposing a proposal to nationalise the banks made by Mr William Irvine, of the United Farmers' party, Mr E. N. Rhodes (Minister for Finance) told the House of Commons that if the banks were socialised the governments would control banking principles and eventually smash them. He asked what would happen if a government, facing an election, had to choose between the country's good and its own political fate.
