Pursuant to notice of motion. Cr. E. Blackmore moved that the resolution passed at a meeting of the council held in January delaying the date for imposing the 10 per cent, penalty for unpaid rates from February 15 to March 15, be rescinded. Cr. Blackmore said that the council could not legally make this concession. Correspondence was received from the Minister for Internal Affairs stating that the Government had no intention of re-enacting the legislation passed last year giving local authorities power to postpone the penalty date for unpaid rates. It was pointed out by councillors who were in favour of the later date, that the Government did not pass the necessary legislation last year until November, and there was still ample time for them to do so this year. After further discussion the resolution was carried by five votes to four. Exception to the rate of wages paid to relief workers under the new scheme was taken by Cr. W. H. McMillan, who stated that Temuka was on the lowest possible scale and quoted other towns of a similar size where, he said, single men were receiving 2s 6d and married men 3s a week more than the men were getting in Temuka. He also stated that the single men would cease to get relief work at the end of this week, and something should be done for those who were totally unfit for harvest work. Other speakers spoke in similar strain, and it was unanimously agreed to make urgent representations to the Unemployment Board. The mouth of the Opihi river, which was blocked for some considerable time, has been opened by a gang of men, under the supervision of Mr F. W. Pellett, ranger to the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. The river is very low, but some fairly large fish have been taken out of the lower reaches. The Temuka Municipal Band, under Conductor R. G. Allen, gave an enjoyable open-air concert in the domain which attracted a very large number of people. R. Lack it was decided to loan the cup to the club until such time as the association wanted it.
