NUISANCES ALLEGED

WOOLSTON DEPUTATION TO MR C. C. DAVIS A large deputation of women waited on Mr C. C. Davis, of the Davis Gelatine (New Zealand), Ltd., yesterday, to protest against the nuisances created by the factory, particularly on Monday. Mr E. L. Hills, secretary of the Woolston Ratepayers' Association, introduced the deputation. He said that the residents had been very patient, and had appreciated the efforts made to improve the position, but the odour coming from the premises on Monday had been abominable. In fact, nothing like it had been experienced previously. As if this in itself had not been bad enough, dense columns of sooty black smoke continuously enveloped the district. Most of the women present had their washing on the lines that day, and they had been compelled to rewash the clothing. Even then it had been impossible to get it to dry free from sooty smudges. It was found to be impossible to keep houses clean and food could not be stored in outside safes owing to the penetration of smuts and soot. Mrs J. M. Bain and Mrs T. Hammond also spoke strongly against the nuisances created and appealed for reasonable consideration for persons Jiving in the affected areas. Mr Davis heard the deputation attentively and in reply said that he had every sympathy with the residents and would do all that he could to minimise the nuisances complained of. He had plans at present in hand which he hoped would leave no room for the residents to complain when they were put in operation.
