THE RETURNED SOLDIERS
EMPLOYMENT AND RELIEF MEETING OF EXECUTIVE OF ASSOCIATION The executive of the Christchureh Returned Soldiers' Association met last evening. The Rev. F. T. Read presided, and there were also present Messrs J. S. Chisholm, T. L. Drummond, W. E. Leadley, C. Miln, E. Orchard, A. W. Mewton (treasurer), C. Chisnall, B. O. Priddis, and E. F. "Willcox (secretary). The report of the employment committee stated that the of new registrations for the last fortnight was 14, making a total of 435. The employment officer had reported that 210 men had been employed on 295| days, at a cost of £69 10s 3d, during the last year. Unsubsidised work had been done on 73£ days. Reference was made by members of the executive to the increase in registrations. Mr Leadley remarked that a similar increase was noted in civilian registrations. Grant of Relief ! The benevolent committee reported that 245 applications for relief had been granted during the last fortnight. Four applications had been declined and one deferred. It was stated that since the Metropolitan Relief Committee had decided not to issue more rations there would probably be an increase in the number of applications to the- association. Mr Orchard said he thought the association should, ask the Unemployment Board for some assistance in granting relief. The suggestion was deferred and the report adopted. " Imperial Men , The National War Funds Council wrote advising that for expenditure of its moneys in assistance to Imperial and other overseas soldiers, a limit of £5, or £lO in special circumstances, be made in the total amount given to each man. t It was decided to comply with the requirements of the council. In a long discussion members expressed concern at the whole position of relief for Imperial men, but it was stated that there were other sources for their relief. It was decided to hold the returned soldiers' picnic on February 16.
