Three thousand miles' travel in New Zealand was done in 15 days by Mr and Mrs J. Watkinson, of Halifax, Yorkshire, who are making a world tour. They left England early last October and used air, motor, or rail through South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. From New Zealand they are going to San Francisco, Vancouver, Honolulu, Japan, China, and India, and they will arrive home next June. They hired an eight horse-power car in Auckland and negotiated 2600 miles in 12 days along both coasts of both islands. Speaking of the progress made by flying, Mr Watkinson said it cost £ 13 to go by rail from Cape Town to Johannesburg, and the journey occupied three days. The trip by air cost only £1 more and was accomplished easily in one day. Hiring a car was a very economical method of seeing New Zealand, he said. He considered it was cheaper for two people to hire a light car. or for four people to hire a powerful car, than for them to pay for rail and service car transport.
