JFOUR MORE RECORDS BROKEN BRILLIANT FORM OF D. H. SYMES AND MISS HUGHES C \NTEKBURY CHAMPIONSHIP*ENDED Pmjr ci 1 records "\veic j biokcn st the Te lid Bathr Ja?t night, when the linn! :--ection of the Canterbury championships held. At the fir.st section in the St. Albant baths on Saturday tin.- >ame number of records svai also broken. Two of the records last ni.uht went to Miss N. Hughes, of the East Christc-hurch Club, thus making her title and record liLiciei in the four events in which she started. D. H. Syme.s lElmwood) lowered his own record for the 100 yards by one second, the new Jigure boins 50 4-ssec, while JMiss r?. Low (Christchurch-United) broki. tiie intermediate girls' record for the To yurd> brcaststrokc event by three second:-.

Symes swam brilliantly to reduce his 100 yards record by one second, in one of the most exciting races of the meeting. His victory was the result <if a magnificent burst in the second length, which put him nearly two vards ahead of R. Mackenzie, who at the 33 1-3 vards mark had been level. Considering that N. Crump's Dominion record of 55see was made in the fast j-alt water of Auckland, Symes's performance was very little, if at all, inferior. In the 440 yards event Symes beat the title-holder. C. Cliff, by seven yards in time. On the last two occasions on which they met. Symes and Cliff dead-heated. Miss A. Morris i Elmwood). the titlehclder in two events decided last night, was beaten by Miss Hughes, whose performances have been the most outstanding of the whole meeting. Last night Miss Hughes broke the 50 yards record of 32sec, established by Miss Morris, by 1 4-ssec, and the 220 yards record, also made by Miss Morris, by 6 3-ssec, winning by 25 yards from Miss Morris. Her performances place her definitely in New Zealand championship class. Her time for the 220 yards is only 6 1-osec outside the Dominion record. Her other records, made on Saturday, were for the 100 yards and the 440 yards events. Miss Low's time in the 75 yards breast-stroke event was 63 2-ssec, breaking Miss D. Breward's previous record by three seconds. The time was 3 3-ssec outside the New Zealand record.

E. Crossley (Phillipstown) showed' good form in the second stage of the men's diving championship, and won by nearly live points from S. Muff 'Linwood). The intermediate boys' championship went to L. Donaldson 'East Christchurch). who dived very well. The junior boys' title, the dives for which were held on Saturday, was won by R. Woodham (Phillipstown). J. Bruce (Christchurch-United) retained his title as breaststroke champion over 220 yards, beating L. Newell 'Sydenham) after a good race. The t.me was well outride the record. Miss Morris's only win was in the women's 100 yards backstroke, in which she beat the only other starter, Miss V. Berry (Christchurch Ladies) in good time. NOTES

CANDIDATES FOR NATIONAL MEETING SMALL CANTERBURY REPRESENTATION LIKELY | Bv .LvKKKSTVLE.] Performances among the seniors in Ihe first day at least ol the Canterbury swimming championships indicate that the province will not be ■trongly represented at the New Zealand meeting at Auckland next month. It is unlikely that among the men more than one, G. Low, will have more than a good chance of bringing a title to Ihe province. Swimming unpaced in the 150 yards backstroke event on Saturday, Low returned the good time of lmin 50 3-sscc. which is four seconds outside his own New Zealand and Canterbury record. .Last; year, Low, then the holder of the title, was beaten by Whareatu. who until then was unknown as a 1 backstroke swimmer. Since then Whareatu has been to the Empire Games, and it may be assumed that he has benefited from this experience; but Low is swimming better this year than he has ever done. His performance against R. Clark, the Australian Empire Games representative, when the latter beat him by a touch in a 100 yards race, proves that. Low's lime on that occasion was 66 l-ssec, which equalled Clark's state record. The issue between Whareatu ancl Low, in the absence of information about Whareatu's form this season, can only be a matter of conjecture, but it is certain that if the titleholder is in form there will be no more than a slight advantage either way. It should be one of the iinest races of the meeting.

The remarkably line showing of Miss N. Hughes in the . senior women's events on Saturday has given her strong claims to consideration. At the national championship meeting, held in the St. Albans bath last year, the 100 yards women's title was won by Miss M. Leydon in 69 l-ssec in a splendid finish. On Saturday Miss Hughes covered the distance in G9 4-5 sec, to win by three yards. On that performance she would have a good chance at Auckland. Her time for the 440 yards event does not. compare favourably with the winner's time at the national championships, Miss Leydon registering Gmin 2 l-sscc, whileMiss Hughes's time was 6min 23 4-ssec.

In the 220 yards women's breaststroke, Miss R. Low, who broke the Canterbury record on Saturday, might gain a place. Miss J. Webster, who won the national title last year, has registered 3min 23 3-ssec, while Miss Low's time was 3min 39 3-ssec. Miss Webster's time in winning .the title was 3min 32 l-ssec. D. H. Symes is the only other possibility, and his form of recent, weeks indicated that he would be a strong candidate for selection. His time on Saturday for the 220 yards was four seconds outside the Canterbury record, and 11 seconds outside the New Zealand record established by N. Crump, who will compete again next month at Auckland. Last year Crump won the title in 2min 28 2-ssec. Symes was fourth in that race. His form is inferior to that of both Crump and Frankham, but whether it is so much so to jus'lify his exclusion is doubtful. The team to represent the province, as well as a water polo team, will be chosen at a meeting of the Canterbury Centre this evening. The Harbour Kac<> The race to be held by the Canterbury Centre at Diamond Harbour next Sunday has drawn surprisingly good entries. Nine teams have been nominated, each of four swimmers, while four individual entries have been received, making 40 competitors. The course will be of one mile, and the race will be a handicap, but all the competitors will start at the same time. The race has been divided into three sections, as follows: —(1) Teams' race for affiliated clubs; (2) individual championship; (3) individual handicap. The trophy for the teams' race is the"H.M.S. New Zealand Shield, which was presented by the centre to H.M.S. New Zealand for a naval swimming competition. When the ship

was scrapped some years ago, the trophy reverted to the centre. It is intended to make the race an annual fixture, and the number of entries supports the centre's hope. Entries of teams have been received from the following clubs:--Lyttelton Men's (2), Phillipstown <2), East Christchurch i,2). Elmwood (I). Christ.-church-United '1), Beckenham (I), while individual entries have been made by competitors from the Elmwood, Sydenham, and the Christchurch Ladies' clubs. Two competitors are women, Miss P. Hill (East Christchurch), who will swim in a team, and Miss M. Birchfield (Christchurch Ladies'), who is an individual competitor. Those who have good chances of winning the individual championship are M. Connor. M. Butterick, C. Cliff, T. Champion, M. R. Rattray, and J. Young. The race will be held at Diamond Harbour after the arrival of the launch which connects with the 10 a.m. train from Christchurch. Charlton's Surprising Form Because it contained an element of surprise, the 440 yards' handicap success and showing of Andrew Charlton on his reappearance in competitive swimming in Sydney recently overshadowed even the superb style of the '•&cord-breakin2 Japanese backstroke

champion, Kiyokawa, stales the "Telegraph," Sydney. .It was the manner of Charlton's win against a field of first-class performers, rather than the time, that impressed. The former dual Olympian had set himself a big task, but he advanced considerably towards the achievement of his objective. His ability to regain much of his former prestige, doubted by many before his appearance, must now be generally accepted, it is said. Attempting a distance over which, in 1924, he equalled the world record of smin 11 4-ssec, Charlton clocked a fifth ot a second less, left his opponents splashing through his wake over the last lap, and finished without any sign of distress. He might easily have improved on his time, but a far more interesting aspect of his form was his use throughout the race of the revised arm, work and beat, which is expected to carry him so far toward success.
