HONORARY DEGREE CONFERRED
♦ DR. DIAMOND JENNESS "FORMER NEW ZEALAND STUDENT The honorary degree of Doctor of Literature was conferred on Dr. Diamond Jenness by the Senate of the University of New Zealand yesterday, on the recommendation of the Academic Board. Dr. Jenness was formery a student of Victoria University College, graduating M.A. in 1908 with first-class honours in classics. He .is at "present chief of the anthropological section under the Canadian Government, and in charge of the anthropological department of the Canadian National Museum, Ontario. Dr. Jenness proceeded to Oxford after his studies in New Zealand, and there took the second part of the Literae Humaniores school, and also obtained the diploma in anthropology. In 1912 he conducted an expedition to the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, where his brother-in-law was a missionary, and in 1920, along with his brother-in-law, published an account of his entitled "The Northern D'EntrecasDr. Jenness was a member of the Canadian Arctic expedition of 191318, and has written numerous ana extensive reports dealing with various phases of Eskimo anthropology, and in addition a well-known book entitled "Children of the Twilight, published in 1928. In 1932 he published an exhaustive report on the Indians of Canada. In 1933 an important series iof monographs by leading American authorities dealing with the American aborigines was published under his editorship and to this series he contributed a paper on "The Problem of the Eskimo." _ Dr. Jenness is recognised as one of the leading anthropologists of the present day, and his published works are evidence of his outstanding literary ability.
