THE ISLAND OF JERSEY
SUNSHINE AND LOW INCOME TAX RESIDENT'S DESCRIPTION Income tax at 4d in the pound, much sunshine, and low prices for tobacco and alcohol were among the attractions of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands as described by Mr Alex. Taylor, a prominent English business man who has retired to live there, in an interview yesterday. Mr Taylor, who . has travelled widely, is visiting New Zealand to study the (business and trade conditions of the country. "Jersey," said Mr Taylor, "has among its population many retired army men, and others with moderate income, who would be hard hit if they had to pay the income tax demanded in England. It has 200 more hours', sunshine a year than the best spot in the South'of England. Its climate is mild, largely because of the Gulf Stream, and it is not so damp as England. Tobacco, can be bought for two thirds qf its cost in Englandr and alcohol for half. "Jersey has its own parliament, very much of the same typ'e as that of the West Indies, with some members nominated by the Government and others by the people. It has a Governor-GeneraL
"There is in the island a large French element," added Mr Taylor. "Its economic position has improved since the introduction cf tariffs, which have had the effect of excluding French vegetables, particularly potatoes and tomatoes, from England. Further, up to the time of the introduction of these tariffs, many farm labourers from Brittany were employed, but the stipulation now is that English labour is to be employed on the farms. Jersey is one of England's biggest sources of supplies of vegetables."
