LIFE SAVING

INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS FIRST EVENTS OF SEASON The first of the soason's surf clubs' competitions, held by the Canterbury Surf Life-saving Association, took place at the Waimairi Beach Club yestorday, and created keen interest among members of the various clubs. The day was gloriously fine and the morning's events wero carried out in ideal conditions for surf work. In the afternoon a stiff easterly wind sprang up and this, coupled with n strong current and the long; distance to the buoys, made the conditions the most severe under which competitors have had to contend for some years. Four events were hold yesterday, the single-handod rescue, intermediate resuscitation, the Newburgh shield, and the Sumnor Cup, the teams competing representing Sumner, Taylor's Mistake, Waimairi, -Now Brighton, South Brighton, and North Beacli clubs. The various events were keenly contested and a fine display of surf life-saving was given. Owing to a now method of calculating the points, the results of the Newburgh shield and Sumner cup will not be known until to-day. Mr A. I. Cottrell thanked all the officials and others for their co-operation, which, he said, had made the competition such a success. He also thanked the Waimairi Club for the excellent arrangements it had made for carrying out the day's events.
