RAIN IN WELLINGTON
SPORTS POSTPONED [THE FBBSS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, January 20. Although districts further north appear to have missed the rain, Wellington experienced** an unsettled, squally day on Saturday, with a strong northwesterly wind and driving rain. All outdoor sports, with the exception of the Mothes Shield rowing regatta at Petone, were postponed. The rainfall at the "Dominion" building for the last 48 hours amounted to 81 points. Umbrellas made their first appearance in the streets for about two months, and in one or two cases goloshes were to be seen. While sporting enthusiasts were downcast at the rain, gardeners were jubilant, and on all sides there was a fresh appearance this morning. Scattered showers fell throughout Saturday night at Wanganui, but.no rain fell at Masterton. although conditions were threatening. The hopes of Manawatu farmers and gardeners that the protracted dry spell of weather was coming to an end were dashed, as only eight points of rain were recorded in the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. to-day.
