A member of the surf club at Castlecliff told a Wanganui reporter that he had rescued at least 10 small children in the surf this summer when they were being carried out of their depth as a result of wearing inflated rubber belts around their waists. In Sydney, he said; the surf clubs had protested strongly against the use of these toy life belts. Young children who were unable to swim were considered by their parents to be quite safe if they wore these belts,' but often when they fcad got out beyond their depth they could not regain the shore, Without the belts they would remain in safety with their feet oh the bottom. In the baths, where there was supervision and the water was still, young children could ,use rubber belts with safety, but he considered parents should be warned against their use in the surf. Tomato growing is not an industry that one would expect to find carried on in the heart of the city of Auckland, but there is a flourishing bed of tomato plants scarcely 50 yards from Queen street. Open to the public it speaks well for the general honesty that the tomatoes are unharmed; and the adjacent fruit shop bears, a notice announcing that it grows its own tomatoes. The little vacant patch . between two buildings produces other vegetables and flowers.
