Wellington was also placed second on three occasions. The winning crew, H. Hannah and K. Hendry, had the misfortune to break their mast in the first race, but were not then in a winning position. Race Called Off The morning race was started in a light north-east wind, and a calm sea. In approaching the Sticking Point buoy on the first round, Otago fouled Kaiapoi under the port and starboard rule and retired. At the expiration of the time limit of two and a half hours, the race was called off. At that time Paremata had a • lead of the full length of the course over the next boat, Lyttelton. In the afternoon the race was resailed over the same course, and with the same boats. Before the race the officials met to conaider the case of Otago, which had been disqualified in the morning race, and it was finally decided that Otago be allowed to start. The afternoon face was started in a light breeze, with the promise of more wind before the finish, and a calm sea. By agreement the time limit for this race had been extended to three hours. The start-was at-3.20 p.m. ■'"'■'■■- 1 Paremata and Lyttelton were first away, the local boat weathering Paremata .close in to the pier. These two and Otago worked up the shore, -the. others -standing further out. Lyttelton made a good board right into Shaw, Savin's corner. Wellington put Paremata about and took the weather position. At the buoy, Lyttelton had a lead of lmin 25sec ahead of Wellington, with Kaiapoi third. There was a jostle to get around among Paremata, Plimmerton, Timaru, Otago, and Christchurch. There was np change in position on the run. In turning the pile, Timaru shot in between Plimmerton and Paremata, and the mark, and took fourth position. The first round was. completed as follows: — ■

It was no disgrace for the other crews to.be beaten by yachts- \ men such as Lyttelton produced. "We are very jealous of the isupport given to yachting in this little town of Lyttelton," said Captain Keane. v "You have the older" men to thank for that." Yachting was the cleanest of sports and helped to keep growing boys out of mischief. It taught them selfreliance and initiative. On behalf of the Wellington Yachting Association he congratulated Lyttelton on the win. i Mr T. Cuthbert, Otago delegate, said it must be a matter of pride for Mr T. Hendry, that he had a son who skippered the winning crew last year and had another son in the winning crew this year. The proceedings closed with cheers for the Lyttelton crew. Gift of Miniature Cop Mr C. E. Brown, commodore of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor-Boat Club, received the following telegram on Saturday evening, from Mr E. O. Moller, president of the Otago Yachting Association:— "Congratulate you on your great boys. I thought it was ours this year. If miniatures not presented I will have pleasure in presenting two."
