PORTRAITURE PRIZE IN AUSTRALIA
—--♦ WINNER A RELIEF WORKER SYDNEY. January 19, Mr Henry Hanke, who was awarded the Archibald Prize of £390 for the best portrait painting in Australia during 1934, also collected yesterday £2 9s lOd, this being his fortnight's wages as a relief worker. His picture, the selection of which caused a sensation in art circles, was painted with home-made pigments on a home-prepared canvas. Mr Hanke painted his reflection in a mirror. Two years ago, finding there was no sale for works of an "unknown" artist, Mr Hanke was forced to accept relief work. He won the Archibald Prize this year from a record entry of 92, including many of Australia's recognised portrait painters.
