ROVER SCOUTS' LONG CYCLE TRIP

HARDSHIPS IN AUSTRALIA TEMPERATURE OF 114 DEGREES ON PLAIN (Received December 24, 12.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, December 23. Grim determination not to miss the Centenary scout jamboree was shown by three Rover scouts who cycled from Perth to Melbourne, arriving on Saturday, worn and weather-beaten, but with their spirits undaunted. They covered the journey of 2368 miles in six weeks, carrying packs of up to 701b. There were temperatures of up to 114 degrees on the Nullabor plain. The party had only three punctures. The boys crossed the Nullabor plain by following the transcontinental railway line, and were assisted with food by railway workers as there are no towns where supplies are obtainable between Kalgoorlie and Port Augusta, 1800 miles. One hundred and eighteen scouts led by Commissioner Cooksley arrived from New Zealand by the Maheno, 50 are due on the Marama, and the remainder will be on the Wanganella next week.
