Sir—ln reference to the blunder over the drainage rate made by the Rate Collector's department, the Mayor has stated that the council will pay the Drainage Board the amount of shortage, and strike a rate next year for the amount. This is somewhat vague and rather a slip-shod way of stating the case. Does the Mayor mean what he says, or does he mean what he does not say? Will the shortage be added to the drainage rate of next year, or wjll it be collected in the central area from those who escape paying the correct rale this year? Some people have such an easy way of dealing with other people's money that' it. is very desirable that, the process intended should be clearly defined. ] suppose any monetary loss involved through the mistake will fall on the ratepayers.—Yours, etc..
