NEW CHURCHES

ERECTION AT HAREWOOD AND SOUTHBRIDGE "The people of St. James' Church, Harewood, in the parish of Papanui, have been looking forward to the building of a new church in permanent material and their hope is to be realised," says the "Church News." "About 15 years ago a considerable sum was collected and it has since been accumulating compound interest in the bank and has reached the £IOOO mark. The parishioners, desiring only a small church, since the resident population is much less than years ago, when St. James' was frequently too small to hold the congregations that assembled, have had planned a building to seat comfortably about 56 people, at a cost not to exceed £9OO. "Mr R. S. D. Harman has prepared a plan of a charming little church with a small tower at one end and a tiny spire rising out of it, which hasbeen generally approved by Standing Committee. The parishioners considered erecting it out of Waimakiriri

river boulders, which abound in the vicinity, but found the cost would probably be more than for concrete, and decided on the latter material. Tenders will shortly be called for the construction. "A tender has been accepted for the erection of.the new Southbridge church in brick The site of this church, replacing that which was burnt down, is ?£ e J? the most attractive of any in me diocese—ample grounds surrounded by mature trees."
