but from what we read of it pleasure had the lion's share. Many poems and dramas have b.'Hn written concerning the revels that took place in old England on Twelfth Day and Twelfth Night. Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night ' is one of the most joyous of these. There is one old poem which begins: •'On the first day of Christmas My true love sent to me— A partridge in a pear-tree." Each succeeding verse mentions more gifts until, by the end of the twelfth verse there have been 78 gifts in all. including turtle-doves, maids a-milking, swans a-sw.imming and many other pleasant things.
