MAORI PLACE NAMES
TO THE EDITOR 0/ THE PRJCSS. Si r ,_l have read correspondence in "The Press" about Maori place names. While I have no intention of entering into the discussion, yet I cannot let pass statements made by a correspondent, F. S. Hartley, that no one in Rangiora uses the nasal "ng" in Rangiora. As a Maori linguist, born and brought up amongst the Ngapuhi, I have always been complimented by Maoris on the correct pronunciation of their language, and every chance I get I impress on my hearers the true pronunciation of Maori names, especially in my town of Rangi-ora. Mr Hartley's sneer against the 2YA announcer is not justified. Whanganui is correct, not Wanganui, which is meaningless. It is correct for Whanganui natives to pronounce it "Fa" ngartui. I would also like to compliment Mr Currie, the 3YA announcer, on his correct pronunciation of Maori words, which is not affectation. —Yours, etc., W. A. ROWSE. Rangiora, December 21, 1934.
