SAILING

SANDERS CUP CREW SELECTED FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR CONTEST The crew for the next Sanders Cup. contest at Stewart Island was selected at last night's meeting of the Canterbury Sailing and Power Boat Association, and financial arrangements were discussed. Mr H. D. Leeming presided, and there were alt-so present Messrs H. Macintosh, W. H. Beanland, G. R. Curtis, J. T. Hobbs, F. Hobbs, O. Barnes, C. Banks, and I. Treleaven (secretary;.

The secretary ol the Sanders Cup committee, Mr Beanland, reported that the trials were well run and entirely convincing. The committee had given exhaustive consideration to the selection, that of boat and skipper giving no trouble. It had been left to the skipper to make suggestions for the other members of the crew. The meeting confirmed the selection of the Irene as the boat, and of E. O. Sinclair as its skipper. The following were selected to make up the crew. F. Forman, H. May, and R. Hendry. Mr Beanland remarked that the committee, in choosing a fourth member, had thought it necessary to select an extra spinnaker or forward hand, in case rough weather was encountered. The Corn well Cup committee notified that the next contest for the cup would be held at Tauranga early in 1935. Tt was unanimously decided that the Canterbury Yacht Club should control Ihe Z class contest this year. Suggested Alteration to Rules The Brighton Power Boat Club wrote, under date October 2, that at its last annual meeting a motion was passed that the Canterbury association's rules, now under revision, should provide that all delegates to the association should be boat-owners. It was requested that the statement in the letter should be taken as a notice of motion for the next annual meeting of the association. The secretary of the Brighton club, Mr H. Macintosh, explained that when the annual meeting of the association was held, the letter was ruled out of order as a notice of motion. The chairman of the innual meeting, Mr G. R. Curtis, said that no delegates had been advii-ed of the proposed alteration, and he had therefore ruled that proper notice of motion had not been given. He assumed that clubs had now been notified, and that delegates had received instructions. "Are the Brighton delegates," said Mr Curtis, when they had stated they would not move a motion, "not going to back up a proposal brought forward by their own club? The matter has been discussed freely among yachtsmen, and many would like to know why the proposal was originally made." Mr Macintosh said that, the matter had become a notice of motion for the next annual meeting. On the application of Mr Curtis, reference was made to the minutes of the annual meeting. It was disclosed that the meeting decided to hold a special general meeting to consider the Brighton's club's proposal. Mr Curtis moved, and the motion was carried, that "a special general meeting be called on the same date as tho next ordinary meeting of the association to consider the Brighton Power Bent Club's proposal." Finance Messrs H. V,'. Harris. T. Hobbs. and W. H. Beanland were appointed :• finance committee to devise methods of raising money for the Sanders Cup contest. A sum of L'-i was granted by the association [or the upkeep of the Irene. It was left to the finance committee to insure the boat. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Curtis, that all conference decisions forwarded for ratification should become effective by the votes of each association. The contest for the Navy League Cup will be sailed on the estuary on March 16. It was later decided to hold a regatta on the same date, delegates being unanimous that it should be held on the estuary.

THE CHEW Elliott O. Sinclair has been taking part in Sanders Clip contests for several years. He was a member of George Brassell's crew in the Avenger when she won at Wellington in 1932, and again at Lyttelton in 1933. In January, this year, sailing Irene, he won the right to represent Canterbury in the defence of the cup at Lyttelton. and succeeded in retaining the trophy. Sailing Irene again this season he won the first three trial races in succession. F. Forman, the spinnaker hand, is now becoming a veteran, with several contests to his credit. Undoubtedly he has been the best spinnaker hand in the 14-footer class in New Zealand during the last two or three years. He is also a handy man at the tiller, and last season raced Colleen with considerable success. H. May, the third man. will be taking part in his third contest. R. Hendry a newcomer to the crew, is, like the'others, a graduate from the Z. or Takapuna, class. He was spinnaker hand for W. Tissiman when the latter won the Cornwell Cup at Wellington in 1932. He was the representative skipper the following year, when the contest was held at Lyttelton. but was unsuccessful. At the contest, at Dunedin in January of this year he won in handsome style, his ability to handle Takapunas and his seamanshiD earning him warm praise from southern critics. LYTTELTON / CLASS CREW CHOSEN At a special meeting of the sailing committee of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor-Boat Club, H. Hannah was selected ekipper to defend the Z class cup for Lyttelton in the inter-port contest to commence at Lyttelton on January 16. K. Hendry w* s chosen for forward-hand. Mr M.
