<► I WEDNESDAY ] 'Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.i | SWAN EGGS TAKEN John Everest was charged with robbing swans' nests on Lake Ellesmere on October 15. Mr M. J. Gresson appeared for the North Canter- | bury Acclimatisation Society. Everest pleaded not guilty. E. Bearman, a ranger in the employ of the society, said he had watched defendant through Held glasses going round the swans' nests stooping down and going back to a large toi-toi bush on the island. Bearman had gone to the island when Everest had left and had found -10 swan eggs gathered in a heap. He had approached Everest later when defendant denied knowing anything about the swan eggs, but had mentioned thai he had seen six mallard duck eggs there. Bearman had found the mallard eggs under the heap of swan eggs. Everest, in giving evidence. again denied having anything to do with the swan eggs. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault on Charles Henry Barsdell on November 20. STRAYING CATTLE The Paparua County Council (Mr J. D. Hutchison) proceeded against Johnston Anderson and Ernest A. White for permitting cattle to wander on public roads in Prebbleton. Each defendant was fined 10s with orders for costs. DISEASED ORCHARDS For having fruit trees which had not been properly treated for various kinds of blight the following were fined and ordered to pay costs: Raymond Blank, £]; George William Bowron. 10s; George Cowpcr. £1; Charles Vingoe Glasson, 10s: Sydney William Stott and Patrick Michael Keenan, 10s. A similar charge against Russell Thurlow Thompson was dismissed. CRUELTY TO HORSES David James White, an inspector employed by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, proceeded against Edward Quaid for being the owner of two draught horses and permitting them to be worked in harness while suffering from sores. He was convicted and fined £3, and ordered to pay costs. TRAMWAY BY-LAW BREACHES Annie Jane Lee was convicted and ordered to pay costs for failing to produce her tram ticket on demand for inspection.
