STRAY DOGS AT NIGHT
,—»—. CONTROL WANTED BY FARMERS LEGISLATION SUGGESTED The nuisance caused by stray dogs roaming after dark was discussed at a meeting of the North Canterbury Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union yesterday, when h was decided to support a suggestion that the Government be urged to pass a law on the subject. A letter from the Oxford branch asked the executive to discuss a suggestion of the Southland branch that the Government should make it illegal j'or dogs to be allowed to roam after dark. Mr H. G. Parish said there were hundreds of dogs with practically no owner.-, and a law was wanted so that tney would not be allowed to roam after dark. In the Oxford district Ihcre were several dogs which appealed to have no owners, but it also appeared (hat when sporting people v'aiitecl to go shooting they whistled up one of the dogs,, used it, and then allowed it to roam again. He himself iiad been troubled by stray dogs trying to turn his dogs out of their kennels. It caused a lot of barking at night. Moreover, no sheep were safe. It was quite common to find stray dogs among ewes at lambing time. At present there seemed no remedy. Mr T. Mould said a lot of the trouble was caused by the farmers themselves. IE they were quicker to shoot it would make people more careful about leaving dogs loose. Mr Parish: There should be some law to say that they must be chained Up after dark. Pie moved that the executive support the Southland branch in trying to have some law passed which would make it compulsory to exercise some control over dogs after night. This was carried.
