THE CUBIC CONTENT OF ORANGES

TO THE *DITOII Or THI r«»SS. Sir.—The relative value of oranges has occupied my mind recently and now I shall give you the remit of my calculations. I used the common formula for the volume of a sphere. The 2 inch orange for which 1 paid 2d had a volume of four cubic inches (approximately). The 2J inches orange at five for Is had a volume of eight cubic inches (approximately). The 3 inches orange at four for Is had * volume of 14 cubic inches 'approximately). The inches and 4 inches oranges at three for Is had a volum-; of 22 cubic inch.es (approximately) respectively. Now, if these calculations ate taken as correct, the four inch orange, instead of being sold at three for Is, should be Is 4d each. It has eight times the volume of the two inch orange. But foolish parents will still buy the small, cheap fruit.—Yours, etc.. POORMAN. November 21, 1934.
