ARRIVAL IX CIIRISTCin R< II Pi. V. Clark and H. Tickle, the two Australian swimming champions, who wilJ tour the South Island, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning and went on to Ashburton, where they opened their exhibition tour last evening. Clark, who is backstroke champion of Australia, represented thai, country at. the Empire Games. Tickle won the high-board diving championship of Australia this year. On arrival. Clark and Tickle said that they were ea'gcrly looking forward to their tour of the South Island. They had heard much about the enthusiasm and hospitality of the swimming public of New Zealand, and now that their turn had come, they were anxious to experience it. Asked his opinion about Ihc relationship of athletics and swimming, Clark, who was considered the finest all-round schoolboy athlete Australia has ever produced when he was at Sydney High School, said that he considered that swimming did not affect field games, but rather helped them, but athletics on the other hand, were definitely opposed to swimming, especially sprint running. Swimming in Australia did not receive the publicity it warranted. Mr Dudley Hellmrich, a well-known Australian coach, was -to have accompanied the swimmers on their tour as manager, nnd was to have lectured at each of the towns visited, but announced his inability to tour at the last minute. Clark said yesterday morning that it was through illness in hi.family and his being unable to obtain leave from his business in Ihe Sydney Post Office, that Mr Hellmrich was unable to visit. New Zealand with them.
