BEATH AND COMPANY'S NEW BUILDING

TWO FI.OOKS TO BE OPENED SOON Every effort is being made to have the main and the lower ground floors of Messrs Beath and Company, Ltd.'s new building ready for the use of the 1 public within 10 or 12 days. Workmen are now being employed in night and day shifts, and a great deal has yet to be dune, but the management is confident that progress from now will be very rapid, and that these two floors can be finished and stocked by Mondav week. Mr C Ogil vie, manager of Mcwrs Beath and Company, Ltd.. said yesterday that the lower ground floor was something altogether new to New Zealand It is approached by a very fine stairway, finished in marble. It was particularly interesting, Mr Ogilvic remarked, that the piarblc used came from Marble Point, North Canterbury, Specimens of this marble had been examined by Government geologists, who had considered it to be of high quality. This marble will be used in the stairways, approaches, and doorways. The lower ground floor and the main floor are finished in tcrrazzo, giving a very attractive efTcct. The lower ground floor will be first used for the entertainment of children during the holiday season. The first floor will be illuminated by indirect lighting, which will throw 110 shadows. The effect of this in the colourful shop should be unusual. The doorway to Colombo street has been so planned that in the summer the building will be free from dust, while in the winter it will be protected against extreme cold.
