OBITUARY

MR THOMAS MILLER By the death of Mr Thomas Milled » at Ashburton a lew days, ago, the district has lost one of its oldest and moat respected identities. Mr Miller, who was 8a years of age, was a native of Lancashire, England, and tirsicwne to New Zealand on the Strathnaver in 1073, going first to Wanganui, and came to Canterbury in 1874. Later in the siime year he came to Mount Soiners as a ploughman to the la»e Mr Percy Cox, on the McxuitSomer* Estate. He took a keen interest ifl the early ploughing matches in the county, and won several prizes. In 1875 Mr Miller joined the staff of the Mount Somers Road Board, as roadman, and in 1878 he went for a trip back to England, returning to New Zealand the same year, in the Storm Bird, which was shipwrecked en route. He later lived at Cracroft and in 1885 returned to Mount Somen and worked as teamster for the late Mr John Hood, and in 1890 took UP a farm in the district. Mr Miller married a Miss S. McCariin in 1888, but she died three years later, and in 1896 he married Mrs A. Bell, his second wife predeceasing him more than six year* ago in her ninety-first year. Mr Miller retired about 25 years ago, and «f late years has lived with his- stepdaughter, Mrs J. Grieve, "Evandale," Mount Somers. In his younger life he took a lively interest in promoting the district's progress, the Mount Somers School Committee, Domain Board, and sports bodies being amongst the local bodies he served on as member. As a mark of respect the school nag was flown at half-mast after bi» death. The funeral, which m largely attended, took place atMount Somers on Sunday afternoon, a service being held at St. Aidan's Anglican Church. The Rev. W. T. Hood, MR HUGH CAMERON Believed to be the first white boy t« be born in North Otago, Mr Hugk Cameron died a few days ago at Wat* male. Mr Cameron was born at Ote* popo (now Herbert) in 1855, whence his parents had come from Inverness Scotland. In his younger days Mr Cameron worked in the Catlins Bosfc later removing to Hakataramea. whett he remained until coming to Wairoat* some 31 years ago. He resided at W»mate until his demise. » Mr Cameron was well known am respected in the district, and was a staunch member of Knox Church, and an enthusiastic official of the Waimate Caledonian Society, of which he V s a life member. He married 48 years ago Miss Margaret Brown, who was also the crura of pioneer parents of Herbert. Mr Cameron is survived by h* widow and three sons—Messrs Jam's Cameron (Wellington). JACKSON The death occurred recently, after a short illness, of Mr Walter Jam** Jackson, aged 77 years, at his residence 169 Owen street. Wellington. Mr Jackson, who was born in Papanui *& the eldest son of the late Mr JaSJn Jackson, of Papanui. Mr J ackson H !Jr at one time captain of C Battery. Christchurch.
