SCOUT NOTES

■"'(lSßl'tD I'KUM MKTnoPOLITA.N HEAD ;'! qUAKTERS.I ' I ' j Dominion Council : { The annual meeting of the Dominion : ' ' Boy Scout Council will be held in Wcl- ; lington next Wednesday. It seems a' fitting occasion to give fome descrip- j tion of the constitution of the move- i 1 ' ment in New Zealand, as it is not well j j understood by many soouters. The , I '--couts of New Zealand are controlled 'by the Dominion Boy Scout Council, j ! composed of representatives of the church, professional and businessmen'; ! and others who have interested thern- | selves for many years in the move- ; •'mem. The chairman is Mr Kirk, a" i well-known barrister of Wellington. ; ! The council meeting is held annually • in different centres of the Dominion : and decides the policy of the move- , ment so far as it applies to New Zea- ; land. For instance, last year the. P.O.R. was considered in detail and ; a number of amendments were in- j serted to make them more adaptable , to the Dominion. During the year , the executive control is delegated to j a committee of 12 members, which j meets as a rule at Christchurch. Nine j of these are appointed by the council, ! and the chief commissioner, deputy- ■ chief commissioner, and the metro- j politan commissioners of Auckland, i Wellington, Christchurch, and Dun- j edin are ex officio members. They meet j monthly and their minutes are circulated among all commissioners in the j Dominion. The chief business this year will be the arrangements for the contingent to the Victorian Centenary jamboree, and the Chief Scout's visit to the Dominion, which will take place in February. An innovation in the proceedings will be provided by a series of three papers on scout mat- i ters, which will be read and which ; will probably give rise to considerable j discussion. The speakers will be Commissioner F. W. Sandford (Dominion Headquarters Commissioner for Train- j ing) who will deal with the subject > |of scouts: Miss. Nancy Wilson (Do- ( minion Akcla Leader), who will speak , 1 about wolf cubs, and Commissioner W. ! i E. S. Furby. who will deal with rover ■ [ scouts. ', j New Brighten Camp ! A final reminder is given to scouters that the training camp which is the j j conclusion of the officers' training I course will be held at the New Brigh- | ton racecourse this afternoon. The camp is being held to assist scouters Ito qualify for the camper's badge, | which entitles the holder to take ; charge of a troop of scouts in camp. This will be followed by a theoretical examination and papers will be posted to each candidate during the weekend, so that no time will be lost in completing the examination before the camping season. In the event of any I scouter not obtaining his paper I through the post on Monday, he should '■ make application without delay to I ( D.C.C. Furby at Dominion hcadquar- i ters. Trinity Group | On Show Day the Trinity scouts I \vi:h "Skipper" ar.d "Rh." v/alkud from} St. Martins over Witch's Hill and j through Rapaki to Lyttelton. Through j the bush below Witch's Hill, "Skipper" j went fern hunting, the scouts collect- ; ing wood to light a fire on the beach \ at Rapaki. Near the Old Church is a i ship's bell hung on a very ancient ribbonwood tree, which was used to call the Maoris to service. This is quite an interesting relic. After having lunch on the beach the scouts ex- I plored the wreck of the old ship Woot- j ton, which was stranded on the far I side of the wharf. They bathed, but | "Skipper" merely sun-bahted. The! way home was through Corsair Bay. "Skipper" calmly walked through the astonished holiday crowd in a llax j Maori head-dress made when we | ' 1 rested at Witch's Hill. From Corsair ' Bay the road past the stand-by plant j and the deck was taken, ending up at j; "Ra's" for tea. The troop is going over i the hill again soon, and next time will visit the old defence works about two : miles on the other side of Lyttelton. j • St. Andrew's Group ] A parade held recently of this group j was attended by Commissioner Tids- i ' v ell, who presented a number of stars | ' to the wolf cubs, and also a five-year ! medal to Scoutmaster Macgregor. The j j cemmittte has given a shield for a J patrol competition, which was pre- J ' sented by the district commissioner in j the absence of the chairman, who was ] indisposed.
